Long recognised and acclaimed as the ’true home of the safari’, Kenya is one of the most thrilling and stimulating destinations in the world, a mesmerising and beautiful land that delights and fascinates all who visit. This is a country that is rich in contrasts, from the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya to the tropical beaches of the Indian Ocean. From the wide-open savannah plains to lush rain forests, Kenya presents a myriad of beautiful landscapes and abundance of wildlife waiting to be discovered, whether on land or below the clear azure blue waters of the Indian Ocean.
Comprising some 225,000 square miles and bisected by the equator, it is the home of over forty different tribes who share it with some of the most varied and abundant wildlife in the world. The hospitality and courtesy of the Kenyan people is unequalled, their welcoming smiles and natural warmth perfectly complementing this remarkable and truly beautiful land. From the spectacular dancing of the Maasai to the vividly coloured tribal wear of the Samburu, you will experience a nation that is unique on the African continent in every way.
There are over forty National Parks and Reserves in Kenya, all offering their own unique landscape and individual character and boasting species that are unseen anywhere else in the world. The game reserves are renowned for the “big five” - elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and rhino with many other spectacular and equally intriguing species being quite common. The grasslands of The Rift Valley, the world’s greatest and dramatic geological fault, have been grazed for over 3,000 years and the deep blue waters of the crater lakes provide a magnetic draw for a legion of wildlife.
Kenya is a more compact country than neighbouring Tanzania, but being scored by the Great Rift Valley it plays host to dramatic and diverse vistas and landscapes, from the lush plains of the Masai Mara to the semi arid country of Shaba and the Northern Frontier District. A Kenyan luxury safari holiday offers a plethora of activities and experiences from game drives and walking safaris, to camel safaris and some of Africa’s most exciting riding safaris. Accommodation is wide and varied with tented accommodation on the game reserves providing the perfect outdoor experience in combination with all the luxuries, amenities and comforts of a five star hotel.
Away from the more traditional reserves, close to the exciting city of Mombasa, a ’beach chic’ experience is just waiting to be enjoyed on the dazzling white sandy beaches of the Indian Ocean. This is home to an abundance of exotic marine life with big game fish stalking the deeper waters. With its unique heritage of Arab traders, Portuguese explorers, Indian merchants and British colonists, an indelible mark has been left on Mombasa which when mingled with the Swahili culture, has resulted in the most splendid and colourful blend of architecture, food and people.
WHEN TO GO
In general there is plenty of sunshine all year round. However it is usually cool at night and early in the morning. The equator cuts through the country from east to west so there are almost equal hours of day and night year round.
