The shoreline of this province extends from the Umtamvuna River in KwaZulu Natal, to the mouth of the Storms River on the scenic Garden Route, in the west, then stretching inland to the north, bordering on Lesotho. The Eastern Cape offers endless miles of untouched and pristine coastline and some of the world’s best beaches. Port Elizabeth, alone, has over twenty miles of magnificent beaches and with its perfect combination of warm water, calm sea and fair breezes, it is one of the best sailing venues in the world.
The Eastern Cape also boasts one of the most concentrated elephant reserves in Africa. Home to a herd of 400 elephants, the Addo Elephant National Park allows close quarter viewing. Southern right whales and their calves are regularly spotted between May and November, with both common and bottlenose dolphins often being seen close to shore.
The Eastern Cape boasts a wealth of flora and fauna and is home to the ’Big Five’ (elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo), in a malaria free environment. There are a variety of game reserves in the region, all within easy access of Port Elizabeth. Many of the reserves are the result of years of conservation projects and have now successfully reintroduced many of the species that had been eradicated throughout the hunting years. The many lodges and camps within this glorious region offer visitors a spectacular and unequalled safari experience of luxury, elegance and comfort whilst fiercely maintaining the natural beauty within which they sit.
