Henry Hartley took his first safari into the African Hinterland in 1834. For forty years he spent six months of each year exploring the subcontinent on horseback, or more leisurely, by ox-wagon. His great love of the wilderness – and all Africa was wilderness a century and a half ago – spurred him to memorable feats of endurance and discovery.
These pioneering pilgrimages were documented by artist and writer Thomas Baines, whom Henry Hartley led through many a safari into untamed and uncharted territory.
Henry’s descendants inherited his love for the places and peoples of Africa. After twenty years of leading my own safaris I am continuing the family tradition: breaking new ground and pioneering new trails. My great great grandfather was a hunter, and an acclaimed one. My task is more difficult, and more challenging – it is to lead you back into the wilderness where birdlife and game are to be found in all their old abundance. These must be preserved for the generations that come after us. Your presence on one of our African safaris – be it a Zambia walking safari or a Botswana wildlife safari - will encourage Southern African’s wildlife authorities to extend their net of protection even further.
Hartley’s is no ordinary safari company. We are African safari specialists.
